Hydroseeding (also known as hydromulching, hydraulic mulch seeding, and hydraseeding) is a landscape planting technique that quickly transforms an otherwise barren or reclaimable area into a vibrant living environment using the skilled application of a slurry of mixed seed, mulch, water and sometimes fertilisers. It was first used in the USA during the 1950s and the UK in the 1960s.
The mix is transported to the site in a tank, which can be either truck or
trailer mounted depending on the scale of the project, and is sprayed over
prepared ground in a uniform layer. Hydroseeding is a highly effective
alternative to traditional broadcasting or sowing dry seed and promotes rapid
germination as well as inhibiting soil erosion.
At its most basic, hydroseeding can be used to grass seed a commercial site,
such as motorway cuttings, golf courses, or large lawns. It comes into its own
in treating areas that are simply too large, inaccessible or unsuitable for
conventional seeding methods. It can also be a a much cheaper method of
generating a grass covering than laying turf and is much quicker than simply
sowing seed. Hydroseeding is not limited to grass and can be used to spread
mixtures of wildflower and tree seeds for reclamation, erosion control, or
generation of ecologically viable sites.
A study carried out for the National Centre for Engineering in Agriculture at the University of Southern Queensland demonstrated the effectiveness of hydroseeding compared with control seed applications.
