Erosion Control and Geotextiles

Erosion Control

Erosion ControlHydroseeding provides excellent erosion control for most sites. The binding agents included in the various hydroseeding mixes effectively 'glues' the surface together allowing the growing vegetation’s own root systems to provide the long-term protection. In the photo, the left side of the slope has been hydroseeded, while the right side was left bare. After a prolonged spell of rain, the sandy soil underwent severe erosion where it was left unprotected.

There are sites where more is needed and erosion control methods are employed in particularly poor sites or on surfaces with a high level of water run-off where the standard hydroseeding approach is not sufficient. In such cases, we use geotextiles to provide a tougher surface binding. We use one of two classes of geotextiles depending on the specific requirements of the site. The first is a biodegradable geotextile that provides a binding surface to which the hydroseeding mix can adhere and allows vegetation, whether grass, wildflowers or trees to get a firmer foothold. This geotextile degrades as the site mature. The second class of material is a semi-permanent geotextile, which can provide erosion control for even the most intractable sites. These materials degrade only after several decades of exposure to sunlight and the elements.

We can advise on the effectiveness of different types of erosion control to suit your particular site.
