Sites often need trees and shrubs. For these environments, direct tree seeding (DTS) is the answer. It offers a method of establishment that is a viable alternative to conventional planting. DTS involves the sowing of tree and shrub seed directly on to the site, producing a plant community with a natural appearance which adapts and hardens to its immediate environment. Herbaceous and shrub species are sown with trees providing protective nurse cover and improving biodiversity.

Selected seed mixes are sown either conventionally (drilling, machine or hand broadcast) or by hydroseeding (restricts species to be sown but allows seeding in poor access areas), depending on site conditions. It is ideally suited to subsoils or hostile sites where conventional planting may fail. Nutrient and herbicide application is required for the first 2-3 years for the best results.
